Adult stem cell therapy cures patients of ischemic limb and prevents leg amputation
The results of one of the largest clinical trials studying autologous stem cell treatment of critical limb ischemia, published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, December 2008, showed that more than 90% of the patients were successfully treated and didn't require leg amputations.
Enrolled patients were suffering from end-stage disease with no option for vascular reconstruction.
They were treated with adult stem cells derived from their own bone marrow. Most of the patients were poor and single wage earners for their families who simply could not afford to lose a limb. The success of this study now provides a much needed treatment option for such patients and proves the benefit of adult stem cell therapy.
Although there are a number of anecdotal references to treating limb ischemia using adult stem cells, this is the only study that has passed the peer-review process and has been published in a leading scientific journal.
